Chichester Cathedral has some of the finest art on display of any religious building. This beautiful cathedral has had a succession of art lovers amongst its clergy since its inception in the 11th century, with the  special partnership of Bishop George Bell and Dean Walter Hussey in the 1950s, adding significantly to the great richness of the what is on display today. This tour, led by award-winning guide, Pat Langford, looks at the history of this much-loved Cathedral, why and how it was constructed in the place it occupies today, the different architectural periods on display and how it has weathered a number of catastrophic events, including partial collapse. We will look at gargoyles and (some royal) grotesques outside before entering through the stunning glass doors for a tour of some of the best, and most meaningful art that this Cathedral is privileged to display. We will look at reliefs that may go back to Saxon times, very rare and valuable Tudor friezes that are  some early examples of propaganda, modern tapestries,  Hans Feibusch’s beautiful ‘Baptism of Christ’, a gorgeous font that gleams with copper,  a unique stained glass window by Marc Chagall and Graham Sutherland’s moving ‘Noli me tangere’ amongst other wondrous pieces. You can throughly enjoy the presentation and history behind each piece of art whether you are a person of faith or none.
This visit is very suitable for a Day Out by Train from London. Trains depart from London Victoria Station every 30 minutes and the journey time is 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 10 minute, accessible walk to the Cathedral. The cathedral is fully accessible.
